How to Best Answer The "Why Should We Hire You" Question

There is one very important question often asked in interviews: "Why should we hire you". As simple as this question may seem, some people may find it challenging to answer. I believe that there is a strategy that can be adopted to best answer this question.

By understanding how to answer questions structurally, any question, including interview questions, will be easier to answer. I will share three keys in this article.

To begin with, explain your educational background and previous experiences. Do not simply state, "I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology." Instead, say, "I graduated with honours in Biology from the prestigious University of Watersrand and was one of the top ten graduating students in my class." Use the same approach for your work experience.

Secondly, describe a skill or two you have acquired from your previous experience. For example, "I have mainly worked in teams with people from different backgrounds in my previous experience. As a result of this experience, I have gained an understanding of team dynamics and the intelligence necessary to deal with a variety of personalities within a team. I have also been able to resolve issues more easily without unnecessary stress." Just be sure to choose a skill relevant to the job from the advertisement.

As a final point, describe how the skills you have mentioned above are relevant to the position you are interviewing for. For instance say, "According to the job description, I will be expected to work in multiple teams, and as I previously mentioned, I have extensive experience in this field and will bring all those experiences with me to the position". You can give an example of when you worked in a team and managed a situation.

It is my hope that you find these keys useful. If you are seeing my posts for the first time, I write on topics related to career and personal finance, and my next post will be next Tuesday.
